Show #171 – Wurn Snell of Colitas

Do you ever listen to a song and imagine the lyrics to be one thing as you hear it only to find out the actual lyrics are something totally different?  Yeah, we don’t either.  However, it happens.  Jimi Hendrix and “scuse me while I kiss this guy” instead of “scuse me while I kiss the sky.”  “The girl with colitis goes by” instead of “the girl with kaleidoscope yes” on The Beatles Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.  You get the idea.  The Eagles “Hotel California’s” line “the warm smell of colitas in the air” could be misinterpreted as “Wurn Snell of Colitas…” as reinterpreted at this link where someone asks what the Eagles mean by “colitas.”

What we were trying to do was pay homage to Glen Frey of the Eagles who passed away recently at the age of 69.  We like the Eagles.  And apparently, so did Buck Owens because he recorded some Eagles songs that are out on the Omnivore Recordings label – Buck Sings Eagles.

Show #170 – Red Simpson

Red Simpson, March 6, 1934 – January 8, 2016.  Thanks for the music, Red.  Like many of the other Bakersfield Sound progenitors, Joseph “Red” Simpson came to Bakersfield from the east.  Well, Arizona, but it’s still east of Bakersfield.  While he became known for his truck songs, he wrote many more songs about the usual finding love, losing love, keeping love…  We found a lot of artists we weren’t familiar with, including Jimmy Howard from Australia, who recorded an album titled “My Favorite Red Simpson Songs,” and Ben Steneker, known as “The Godfather of Dutch Country Music.”  There were also two songs we can’t quite verify as being Red Simpson songs, but the songs share the title of a song Red wrote (noted with an *), but they were good, so I threw them in the mix.  Thanks, Red.
