Show #223 – So Long And Thanks For All The Tunes

You have had a good run, little Soundcraft board.

Soundcraft

This is the mixing/sound board that KWMR has used for about 16 or so years. It came to the station used, and has been utilized every day for these many years by hundreds of volunteers. The music, interviews, conversation and banter that this little unit has experienced….well, this little board could write quite a memoir.

This is our last Bakersfield and Beyond on the Soundcraft. When we return in two weeks we will be broadcasting through a new AudioArts unit. Analog, of course!

Show #222 – New Music Featuring Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives

It was the 222nd Bakersfield and Beyond show. It’s not a world record by any means, many of our fellow programmers have been on the air every week for over 18 years at KWMR. There are many committed DJs at the station. It was a fun show. We opted to stick with some newer releases and to promote Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives concert that is happening in Petaluma at the Mystic Theatre on Friday, January 12, 2018. The amazing musicalogist and performer Deke Dickerson opening with a solo set. Somehow the phenomenon that is Kenny Vaughan came up. The dude is everywhere, including in Marty Stuart’s band.

Amanda regaled how once in Nashville she saw him playing with Audrey Auld one night, the next day he was playing at a bar on music row, and then moments later, with a complete wardrobe change, he was playing with Marty Stuart at the Ryman Auditorium. Bill Majoue, a member of the KWMR Programming Committee (community representative) and avid listener, dropped in to tell his Kenny Vaughan story. He had seen him when he played with Lucinda Williams. Kenny also played with Rodney Crowell. When he was a young player, his instructor was Bill Frisell and he played in a progressive jazz band. He was also in a punk band.

In 2002, Vaughan was inducted into the Colorado Country Music Hall of Fame and in 2006 he was awarded Instrumentalis of the Year and given a lifetime achievement award for being an instrumentalist by the Americana Music Association. On his one album, “V,” Marty Stuart plays in the band.

We played some fun tunes, including some traditional Buck and Merle. Keeping it real at KWMR.

Check out the archive, it was fun!
