Omnivore

Nothing better than being an omnivore.  You can go anywhere and find something tasty to eat.  In the case of recordings, if you are an omnivore, you like just about everything.  Luckily for consumers of music, Omnivore Recordings is releasing some great stuff.  Music like Lone Justice’s “This Is Lone Justice:  The Vaught Tapes 1983” and some great collections from Don Rich, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and Wanda Jackson.  We picked up a bunch of new music for the Bakersfield & Beyond collection from Omnivore Recordings recently and had a fun time presenting them tonight.  There’s a lot more to go through and play in upcoming shows.  For now, here’s some youtube clips and the playlist.  Until next show.

Bakersfield Organic

We get questions from folks on occasion about what our next show is going to be about.  First, it’s always about the music.  Second, it’s infrequent that we go into the studio for a show and know what we’re going to play.  Sometimes, we start playing vinyl and just stick with vinyl for the whole show.  Most of the time, we’ll play something and that makes us think of a good follow up which, in turn, leads to another and another and another…

Tonight was like that.  Earlier in the day, I put together set of music from artists who live in Bakersfield (currently or previously).  That went into some Jack White influence (White Stripes cover of “Jolene” and Jack White produced songs by Wanda Jackson and Loretta Lynn) and then some Gram Parsons influenced tunes because the 12th annual “Sleepless Nights:  Tribute To Gram Parsons” concert is coming this weekend to the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.  And it just went like that for two hours.
