Show #145 – Reggae Cowboys

What a better way to start off “Bakersfield & Beyond” with some very beyond music.  The Reggae Cowboys are a band of all-around musicians out of Toronto, Canada who started the Reggae Cowboys in 1993 and play a very fun mash of reggae and country.  We like ’em.

We also played a bit of a set from Dave Alvin and Big Sandy & His Flyrite Boys after seeing them perform last weekend.  Any time you get a chance to see either band – do it.  Both are outstanding shows.  Dave Alvin is currently touring with his brother Phil Alvin, who together co-founded The Blasters before going their separate ways.  Dave and Phil perform some songs off their Grammy nominated album “Common Ground:  Dave & Phil Alvin Play And Sing The Songs of Big Bill Broonzy,” as well as a few select Blasters tunes.  Outstanding.  Phil also sang an amazing rendition of James Brown’s “Please, Please Me.”

Show #144 – 2015 and beyond

Sorry folks, due to unforseen circumstances, we both were unable to make it to the show scheduled to air on January 1.  And since starting Bakersfield & Beyond, we’ve always done a top ten show for the first show of the new year.  However, in our mind, all the songs we play are top ten.  Can you fit 100 songs in the space of your top ten?  We think you can so we simply played some of our favorites letting the current song dictate the following song.  Our favorite way to create a show.  Here’s the playlist and some youtube clips.  We hope you all have a fabulous 2015 and beyond!

But, if we did have a favorite for 2015, it would have to be Sturgill Simpson.  He came out with a new record this year and knocked it clean out of the park.  It was really great to see the success he achieved this past year and we wish him continued success for a long time to come.
