Playlist from last night’s show 6-25-09

We stretched the “beyond” in Bakersfield and Beyond by honoring the memory of a great icon of the music world’s passing. Michael Jackson died yesterday and we slipped a little MJ into the playlist. He made some really good music and was an incredible performer. The bulk of the show was more music from California’s earlier days. California was really where the new music was created – swingin’ big bands incorporating drums and electric guitars and pedal steel guitars into their sound presence by guys such as Bob Wills and Spade Cooley. They played music for the people to enjoy. During our interview with Dave Alvin, he mentioned a song by Wynn Stewart with Ralph Mooney on pedal steel that we should play, if we could find it – Money Talks. It was hard to find, but find it we did, on vinyl, and it is a great song. Ralph Mooney, along with Roy Nichols and Buck Owens are three of the guys credited with creating the “Bakersfield Sound.” Ralph built his own pedal steel guitar in the late 1940’s, which Leo Fender borrowed to study and later gave Ralph a Fender pedal steel.

All in all, we had a great time playing these tunes last night. Two hours went by way too fast with these classics.

Heading to Bakersfield

It’s official! The tickets arrived in the mail this week. Mike, and I (accompanied by our understanding and tolerant spouses) are all heading south in early August to catch the last show on the Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women tour at Fishlips. We also plan to check out a show at the Buck Owens Crystal Palace the next evening. What else is on the agenda? We plan to spend some quality time with Dr. BLT, hope to visit the  Bakersfield Country Music Museum and maybe check out where the sea used to be! Some people think we are crazy to head to Bakersfield in August, but it’s our way of giving back, help the California sagging economy, hear some great music and make some new friends! We are bringing the “beyond” back to Bakersfield!
