Titan of The Telecaster

Fun show tonight and we had a chance to chat with Bill Kirchen, the TItan of The Telecaster, as he was landing in Oakland in preparation for a couple of Bay Area shows.  The first one on Friday April 26 will be held at the Sebastapol Community Center.  The second local show will be on Saturday April 27 at 142 Throckmorton in Mill Valley.  Bill’s shows are always very high energy and driven by great music.  He will take you around the block and then some with his fantastic guitar playing.  For everyone who thought a telecaster was a simple tool of the twang, you need to catch Bill Kirchen bringing his to life.  Thanks for talking with us, Bill.  It was a real treat.

We also got a copy of the new CD from 77 El Deora.  77 El Deora’s Maurice Tani drove a copy out to us recently.  The whold CD is really good listening music.  They do a great cover of the Chuck Berry tune “Nadine” in a very unexpected style.  However, with the “twang noir” of 77 El Deora, they do nail it.  Make sure to tune in to KWMR on Monday April 29, 6:30 – 8:30.  Amanda will be interviewing Maurice on her show “Release Me.”  Maurice Tani and 77 El Deora will also be performing on May 4 at Studio 55 in Marin.

Dan Blocker, Dan Blocker

Those are the lyrics to Gurf Morlix‘s song Dan Blocker.  Dan Blocker is also the actor who played “Hoss” on the Bonanza.  Bonanza, hmm, see where I’m going with this?  The theme song from Bonanza is also one of the most recognizable theme songs in existence.  It was written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans and was orchestrated by David Rose.  And then it was covered by a whole host of folks including several we played tonight such as Johnny Cash, Bad Manners doing a ska version, and Ralf Paulsen covering it in German.

Between the various versions on Bonanza, we also played a little Bakersfield & Beyond and gave out tickets to see Kelly Willis & Bruce Robison perform at the Sebastopol Community Center next Friday April 19.  Super fun show and if you listened live, thanks for listening.

And saving the best for last, Happy Birthday Merle Haggard, born on April 6, 1937, celebrating #76.
