There is nothing like latching on to a compelling theme for a radio show. Digging into the music, the inspiration for the songwriters and performers, and running with it. One could jump down a rabbit hole of research, and craft a show intricately that builds off of one song, a genre, or a specific time in history. The curation of radio shows on KWMR is widespread, and programmers put in hours and hours of time doing just that, in addition to their trips to and from the station, and the time they spend on the air.
The Bakersfield and Beyond hosts (Mike and Amanda) have a load of vinyl, boxes of CDs and a bunch of digital files to draw from, and we are constantly searching for more material to play on the show. It’s also great to host live musicians in the studio.
But sometimes we just show up, pull up some playlists from previous shows on the laptop and let the randomness of the computer run with it. One could call this lazy, but really we are just recycling. The repurposing of good playlists is curation in its own right.
Mike did remove the Christmas songs.
We hope you enjoyed the show!
