Show #214 – Gram Parsons

Ingram Cecil Connor III, November 5, 1946 – September 19, 1973.  We celebrated the music of Gram Parsons tonight.  If you’re a musician, you celebrate your life by playing your music.  Music that you sang.  Music that you wrote that other people sang.  Songs that people sang about you.  Who knew.  Who knew that you would have this cult-like status now or be accredited with igniting the fire that would become country rock.  Or Cosmic American Music, as Gram Parsons called it.  Who knew many musicians would cite you as a major influence.  One thing that is for certain, you left the world too soon.  Not yet 27.

Show #213 – Something Old, Something New

While Amanda is reviewing new music submissions for Release Me (a new music show on alternate Mondays on KWMR) she sometimes comes across tracks that are more twangy, and suited better for a Bakersfield and Beyond set. Tonight was a blend of old and new. A traditional track, followed by something released within the last two years, featuring musicians that are clearly informed by historic music figures, even referencing their influences directly in the lyrics, like Tim Hus and Ryan Chris and the Rough Cuts.

Two hours flew by and the tempo was upbeat and in some cases, downright psychedelic or hard Southern-rock-laced. You can check out the archive here for 14 days from now, and can check out Bakersfield and Beyond every other Thursday on KWMR!
