Show #169 – Year End Close Out

What do you do for a New Year’s Eve show?  Drinking songs?  That could have been fun.  What started off un-formed, soon got form as we played a track off Elvis Costello & The Attraction’s Almost Blue album of country covers.  I’m reading Elvis Costello’s new book “Unfaithful Letters & Disappearing Ink” and wanted to play some stuff off Almost Blue as there’s a some great stuff in his book talking about country music and Gram Parsons, George Jones, Johnny Cash…  But then playing a cover got us looking for more covers by the same artist and then playing a cut or two by that artist.  So, we played a tribute to Gram Parsons, George Jones, and Merle Haggard.  And then we payed tribute to Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead who died this week at 70 years old.  Besides the heavy metal Motörhead songs, Lemmy joined forces with The Stray Cats’ Slim Jim Phantom and Danny B. Harvey of The Rockcats to form the rockabilly super group The Head Cat.

Thanks for listening and we’re looking forward to another year of Bakersfield & Beyond.

Mike & Amanda

Show #168 – Beyond The Songs

Every once in awhile it is fun to run a Bakersfield and Beyond show into the “beyond” realm. There is always a way to root some of the music in the west coast country sound and it was just that twang in Neko Case’s song “Guided by Wire” that got the wheels turning for a theme. The line “those who are singing my life back to me,” hit home. So much of the music sings lives back to the listeners. From there the search was on for songs about songs. In some cases songs that mention other songs and in other cases songs about the effect that songs have on the listener.

It’s a whacky playlist that includes the B-52, Stevie Wonder, Barry Manilow and Lynyrd Skynyrd but there are a few tunes that feature Waylon Jennings and of course, Merle Haggard. BTW, we are pleased to hear that Merle Haggard is doing better and recovering quickly from a recent illness.

Enjoy! Happy Holidays. Back at ya on New Year’s Eve!
