Vinyliscious

Sometimes we roll into the studio without a concise plan of the evening’s show.  We both have day jobs that leave us with not much spare time to prepare a new Bakersfield & Beyond.  Tonight was one of those nights.  In went Tim Hus’ “Bakersfield Music” and we said “what next?”  On the turntable went the Bakersfield Boogie Boys cover of “Okie From Muskogee” and that started off the all vinyl show.  Well, almost all vinyl.  We had a call-in request for a Buck Owens tune that we didn’t have on vinyl.  Two hours go by pretty fast when you’re cuing up that much vinyl.

And today is Jean Shepard’s 80th birthday.  Happy birthday, Jean!

Tonight we played music in celebration of Gram Parsons’ birthday.  It’s interesting how an east coast, Harvard kid became enthralled in country music and particularly in musicians such as Merle Haggard.  It was the 60s and the great rock and roll stars were bursting on the scene and here’s this guy who’s into country music.  But, good on him because in his short span, he was highly influential on a lot of artists yet to come.
