Tribute to Dwight

It is Dwight Yoakam’s birthday this week.  October 23, to be exact.  We’d like to wish Dwight a big ole Happy Birthday and congratulations on the success of his excellent new release “3 Pears.”  We played a bunch of Dwight tunes and a bunch of music by artist who shared the bill with him during his early Los Angeles days.  There are a lot of connections that can be made between the songs we played tonight.  In the early ’80s, Dwight shared the stage with bands such as X, Los Lobos, The Blasters, Lone Justice.  Dwight covered some of these guys’ songs (The Blasters’ Dave Alvin penned “Long White Cadillac,” which Dwight made into a hit).  Dwight also sang background on Dave Alvin’s “Haley’s Comet” and Maria McKee from Lone Justice sang background on Dwight’s “Bury Me.”  Dwight also covered some artists far from the country sound he became popular for including Queen, The Clash, Cheap Trick, and Elvis Presley.

It would be easy to go on and on and on because there is plenty of material and connections that could be made.  Instead, I’ll leave it with these clips and the playlist from tonight’s show.

Dim Lights, Thick Smoke

Boy, can’t get enough of Dwight’s new 3 Pears CD and all the tracks.  The cover of “Dim Light, Thick Smoke” is especially smoking.  Amanda made it to the annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival so we played some tracks from artists who performed there.  As always, we love playing this music and hope you dig listening.
