Show #235 – Nodding Off

Dictionaries say: a nod to/towards something is a a sign that someone is aware of or wants to recognize the influence or importance of something.

There are a lot of nods to the Bakersfield Sound which is one of the things that makes doing this show so much fun. You can chase influences down rabbit holes all day long. But last night there was some real nodding going off in Studio A at KWMR. Mike has been busy with a new order of Black Mtn. Cycles Monster Cross and Road Plus Frames, which were delivered to Point Reyes yesterday. He actually nodded off during the show.

One of the colors of the frames is a nod to Porsche from the days of old. And nodding can be a sign that you agree. We tend to agree on which song to play pretty often on Bakersfield and Beyond.

The show had a more mellow feel to it for the most part, but we still threw in Powderfinger, a great Neil Young tune, performed by the Beat Farmers. Such a great version. And we had to crank that one up, maybe you did, too.

If you like Bakersfield and Beyond, be sure to check out Highway of Heartaches this coming Tuesday at 8:30pm on KWMR. Smelley Kelley and Owen Bly host the show. Smelley is the frontman for Red Meat. They will be playing at a fun concert that KWMR is co-producing with Renee and Irish Greg. The Haggards will open the show, and DJ Barbarella (No Bad Vibes) will be spinning some tracks. And our pal Robert Price will be there with his book about the Bakersfield Sound. August 12th, Sunday – at Love Field under the parachute. We thank Parachute Days for hosting us! See you there!

Speaking of people named Mike, we had a request from one, and we could not find the exact track he wanted to hear, except on Youtube. We did find a version of the tune from the newly released album from Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s new album Downey to Lubbock. Here’s the request. And here’s a link to the archive that will be up for 14 days from 7/12.
