Show #217 – Billy Mize

On October 28, 2017 Billy Mize passed away. In many ways he embodied the idea of the Bakersfield Sound. He was from Kansas, not Oklahoma and was raised in the San Joaquin Valley and learned to play guitar as a child.

Robert Price, author of “The Bakersfield Sound: How a Generation of Displaced Okies Revolutionized American Music” and a senior writer and former editor of the Bakersfield Californian wrote this obituary of Billy Mize. Robert writes: “Mize, a triple threat as a singer, songwriter and television host who won the Academy of Country Music’s TV Personality of the Year award three years in a row, 1965-1967, died at a nursing home in Pleasanton. He was 88.”

“Billy was a crucial player in the birth of the Bakersfield Sound, but his polished style and refined vocal delivery set him apart from his peers,” said music writer Scott B. Bomar. “He could have just as easily been a star of the silver screen had he not chosen a life in country music.”

Joe Saunders, Billy Mize’s grandson produced a documentary about his grandfather’s life. You can check it out HERE. We interviewed Joe a few years back and it was a labor of love and lots of hard work to finish the movie.

We also celebrated the birthday of K. D. Lang and spun a few Dwight Yoakam tunes and a tune from King Leg, a band that Dwight has produced. Then it was a bit of traditional Bakersfield tunes including Buck and Merle. You can check out the archive for 14 days HERE.
