Show #208 – Trout’s

The tale of a honky tonk, a missing sign and a changing landscape for music in Bakersfield. Our pal Robert Price hooked us up with fellow Bakersfield Californian journalist Steven Mayer. Mayer is covering the story of the sale of the iconic bar Trout’s, and speculation that the sign may either be getting restored, or has been stolen. His recent article in the Bakersfield Californian leaves many questions unanswered. We will be tracking this story and will update listeners.

Trout’s is for sale. If you have a spare $349,000 plus some funds for repairs and marketing, you could keep the dream alive in Oildale.

There are lots of songs about Honky Tonks that exist in the Bakersfield Sound. A sound, that has been recorded, and exists and can never be taken away. The playlist for the show focused on honky tonks, bars, drinking and not drinking. Steven Mayer, a drummer as well as a reporter, says that live music is alive and well in Bakersfield, but less country music than in the storied past.

Here’s a story about the issue from KGET in Bakersfield.
