Show #206 – Gene Thome

Gene Thome wasn’t an architect of the Bakersfield Sound.  Heck, he wasn’t even a full-time musician.  What he was was a man who loved the music.  Through that music, and a bit of fortuitous luck at being in the right place at the right time, he met and became friends with Red Simpson.  Singing karaoke in a restaurant in the 90s, Gene’s cover of a Merle Haggard tune and sounding much like Hag, it caught Red’s ear and they two became friend.  Later, in 2015, they got together and Gene recorded an album “It’s A Bakersfield Thing.”  Gene passed away last week from kidney cancer.  We never met Gene or even knew about him until we discovered him as we were putting together a tribute show for the late Red Simpson last year, but we appreciate the flame he held for the Bakersfield Sound.  R.I.P Gene Thome.
