Show #192 – Dan Bern Vinyl Sandwich

Another one of those shows that starts off in one direction, veers, and heads off somewhere else.  We organized the bags of vinyl we have today into more distinct categories so we could have a clearer idea of where to search for particular albums during each show.  One bag has the more traditional Bakersfield artists – Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Wynn Stewart, and yes, we included Waylon Jennings there too.  Another bag has a bit more contemporary artists still steeped in the Bakersfield Sound – The Flying Burrito Brothers (The Byrds, Gram Parsons), “A Town South of Bakersfield” compilation albums, Elvis Costello’s country album, Dwight Yoakam…  The other two are split between older compilation albums and other country artists who weren’t necessarily Bakersfield, but we who we like.

But first we played a track from Dan Bern and decided to fit a Dan Bern track amongst the selections of vinyl.  The first hour was from the more traditional Bakersfield bag and the second was from the more contemporary Bakersfield influenced bag.  Dan Bern?  Not really sure how it happened.  Amanda pulled his CD from the station library to play a track and then we just kept playing.  Kind of typical for one of our shows.
