Show #177 – Prince and The Bakersfield Sound

We like a lot of different music.  And we like it all equally.  Favorites?  Kind of hard to say since we like it all.  Amanda does like her some R.E.M. and I like me some Clash.  But Prince.  Here was a guy who could rock & roll with the best and then play some amazing, soulful R&B.  It was like he was the offspring of James Brown and Jimi Hendrix.  If that’s possible.  A showman and an amazing guitarist.  Prince died today and we started off the show with a tribute to him.  And keeping the the Bakersfield Sound theme, The Derailers, a band out of Texas keeping the Bakersfield Sound flame burning bright, recorded a Prince song on Reverb Deluxe – “Raspberry Beret” that we played.  I couldn’t find in on Youtube, so you’ll just have to pick up a copy of that album to check it out.

And later in the show, Atila Viola from The Bakerfield Boys came into the studio to talk about their music, influences (Merle Haggard), and their upcoming benefit show at the Tomales Town Hall on April 30.  Tickets available at that link in the previous sentence.  Atila, yes, Atila Viola is his real name!, also played a couple acoustic songs live in the studio.  Check out the archive to hear him play “I’m A Lonsome Fugitive” and “I Am What I Am.”
