We had a great time chatting on the phone with Joe Saunders, the film maker who is creating the documentary “Billy Mize and The Bakersfield Sound.” Joe also happens to be the grandson of Billy Mize so the project is also very personal. Billy Mize was one of the architects of the Bakersfield Sound helping to produce Cousin Herb’s Trading Post TV show in Bakersfield in 1953 that featured up and coming artists like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. Yeah, you’ve heard of Buck and Merle, but not as many folks have heard of Billy Mize. Joe’s trying to change that by getting his film produced. He’s got the footage shot and is now working on editing and obtaining the licensing rights to the music that is needed. There is also a section devoted to Billy Mize, as an architect and founder, at the recently opened Bakersfield Sound exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.
Recently, there was a successful Kickstarter project for “Billy Mize and The Bakersfiled Sound,” however, more money will be needed to fully complete the project. The film is sponsored in part by the San Francisco Film Society and tax deductible donations can be made through the SFFS website. It’s sure to be a worthy project.
So, here’s the playlist and some clips.
Even though there’s no video with this next clip, it’s such a great sounding version of “Funnel of Love” with Lux Interior and Poison Ivy from The Cramps back Wanda on this.
