Fun show last night. We had the privilege of airing the Merle Haggard interview we recorded on Tuesday of this week. Big thanks go out to Robert Price of Bakersfield, Gregory DeMascio and to KWMR. What fun! Merle was easey to talk to and seems like yet another really nice person associated with the Bakersfield Sound. Merle’s words of wisdom included “Keep your britches pulled up.” and “Go for it, and if you enjoy it, you will be a success at it.” Both good bits of advice and encouragement for listeners.
We were able to put together a bunch of music to go along with the interview (which will be available for podcast right here on the blog very soon) that included some great Merle Haggard tunes from the new album and some great standards on vinyl, a few Merle covers and a bunch of music from folks that influenced Merle as a songwriter and singer including Lefty Frizzell, Bob Wills and Jimmie Rodgers.
Ty called in from Florida where he was tuning in via with worldwide web. Ty, was the instigator for the Bakersfield and Beyond becoming a show in the first place and has since moved from West Marin back to Florida. Thanks Ty! And Ian Jones called in from Seattle on his way to an acoustic gig to shout out words of praise. Ian will be playing a show here in July at the Station House Cafe on the 15th. Right before Far West Fest – West Marin’s best and most fun all day music festival (July 17th and Love Field in Point Reyes Station).
We also played a tune by Eilen Jewel who will be playing in Sebastopol at Studio E a week from today (June 18). Should be a great show in a wonderful venue. For more information and ticket sales check out North Bay Music.
Frequent (well, every show until this one) contributor, caller and avid fan of Bakersfield and Beyond Dr. BLT (Bruce Thiessen) was unavailable last night because his daughter was graduating from pre-school. Congratulations!
We’ll be back in two weeks with some more fun tunes.
