Playlist and review of last night’s show

While Amanda and I usually talk about what we want to play, or a theme for each show, we usually just show up at the station with a box of CD’s and a couple bags of vinyl and wing it.  Last night was no different.  We did want to play some newer stuff – we were turned on to The Councilmen by Dr. BLT and talked to their song writer, Keaton York during the show.  We also played their song Boxcar Sermon which is quickly becoming one of our favorite new songs.  These guys sound great and are doing right by their Bakersfield, CA roots.  You can also check out The Councilmen and listen to more songs on their myspace page:  The Councilmen on Myspace.

We also played some songs of one of my long-time favorites having heard them on local radio when I lived in the San Diego area, the Beat Farmers.  Country Dick Montana is sadly no longer with us having passed away of a heart attack during the third song of a show in a bar in Whistler Canada, but the music lives on.  They produced some classic country music straight out of the Bakerfield Sound vein in their renditions of John Stewart’s song Never Goin’ Back and Neil Young’s Powderfinger and then they made some of the funnest songs that still crack me up when I hear them like Happy Boy.

After watching the DVD Merle Haggard:  Legendary Performances, Amanda … well, let’s just say that the younger Merle Haggard was a good lookin’ guy and leave it at that.  It was fitting that we found a song called Girl Haggard by Rosie Flores.

So, on to the playlist.  But first some Beat Farmers live.  Boy those guys could play!

  1. I really enjoyed The Councilmen song and the interview. It was also nice to hear some of the punk-influenced songs and some of the stuff that’s hard to come by apart from the vinyl.

I’m pleased to say that two of the bands on the playlist have officially confirmed that will be represented on the Christmas recording we’re doing for Bakersfield Homeless Shelter through the Bethany program—-The Councilmen and Fatt Katt and the Vonzippers. Rockin’ show! Keep spinning the great tunes! I can’t wait for the Californian article on Sunday.
